How do I Pull a Sample With a Bacon Bomb Sampling Unit?

October 09, 2019

In general, testing can be completed with a single sample of a sufficient quantity of fuel.   The total volume required varies based on the number and types of testing to be performed.   Check with a lab representative to confirm how much is required.

To ensure fuel quality, most testing is commonly done on a 'middle' sample drawn from as close to the center of the tank as possible.

PROCEDURES FOR SAMPLING STORAGE TANKS

(With a Bacon Bomb Sampler Unit)

Fuel Sample A should be taken midway down into the tank (middle sample test for stability, suspended water, etc.)

  1. Attach sampler to sampling tape

  2. Attach string to top of sampler

  3. Lower sampler down into tank (midway) and pull on string to open sampler. Allow sampler to fill fully (bubbles will be seen on top of the fuel when sampler is full)

  4. Pull sampler out of tank and place over sample jar

  5. Pull string to open sampler and fill jar with fuel

  6. Place lid on jar and tighten securely

  7. Label jar lid and side with location ID, the letter “A”, and date taken with permanent marker (like a Sharpie) to ensure proper identification and prevent mix up with bottom sample later

FUEL SAMPLE B should be taken at the bottom of the tank

  1. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above

  2. Place water finding paste on side of sampler at bottom and up three inches in order to determine the depth of the water in the bottom of the tank

  3. Lower sampler down into the tank until sampler hits bottom, this will allow sampler to open automatically and fill (bubbles will be seen on the top of the fuel when sampler is full)

  4. Repeat steps 4 through 7 using a second, separate sample jar for bottom sample and label bottom sample with the letter “B”

  5. Check side of sampler to check if water finding paste has changed color (measure the heights of the color change – this reflects the amount (in inches) of free water in the storage tank

  6. If paste shows water has been found, write down the depth of water on the top of the jar

Disassemble the sampler and flush with a cleaning solvent (acetone) to clean

Use paper towels to dry the sampler parts and reassemble sampler unit

Return sampler to its proper storage container
